this is volume two of a two volume set from edit master gay marvine justly called dance floor favorites. these are some of his most sought after unreleased edits that are known for their strong reaction on the dance floor. they cause an instant heat. his perversity shines through the extreme tempo shift of “jungle fever” lifting it up into pure ecstatic dance floor action, with all the eroticism of “french kiss” and all the spanish funk groove of barrabas. we could to listen to the hypnotic “goodnight” for hours on end, finally seeing light on vinyl. gay marvine’s “what’s happening bro” is not an edit per se, it’s what happens when you cross that line and it becomes house. this is perhaps his greatest tribute to moodymann and his sets at better days,hotbox and la dolce vita. the ep ends with the ever dirty “bump man” and gay marvine’s unique feverish take the needy anthem. gay marvine might just be the frankie knuckles of edits, because his music will keep you warm in the cold, a true musical heater.

following the release of 2015’s animistas album on mindtours, steevio returns with the fourth and final volume in the modular techno series after starting the project in 2012. initially conceived as he moved his studio practice towards a purely outboard, analogue, modular synthesiser set up, the modular techno series has charted the development of steevio’s exploration of this working practice both on record and on stage. the work involved in live appearances across the uk and europe over the past four years have fed into the creative process, with rehearsals for sets often yielding the material that has ended up on vinyl. volume 4 is arguably the darkest instalment in the series to date, dealing in a strict economy of minimalist rhythms and off-key melodic touches while still easily identified as the unmistakable tones and distinctive grooves of steevio. in the grand tradition of techno as visionary music, the dystopian tone that lingers throughout modular techno vol 4 points to a future of uncertainty, but this is far from nihilistic music, always within the darkness remains a glimmer of hope.

keith tenniswood returns in 2016 with dub vault vol. 2, the second emission of dubwise productions under his radioactive man moniker, originally recorded a decade ago while based in scrutton street studios. a long time fan of roots, reggae and dub here he fully indulges in the genre whose keystone bass weighted sounds have informed the electro-focused designs he is predominantly known for. explosion begins the ep recorded utilising new toy at the time, a korg esx1 sampler and sequencer, resulting in simple but crashing dancehall beats with a diliinja style bassline that is pure roughage. second track razor sees tenniswood also take up the guitar as well as beat programming in this track named after the * stepping razor* peter tosh and a nod to his music hero adrian sherwood and on u sound vibes. blazer rounds off the ep, a collab with long term dub head and band member with keith from bargecharge (check fuel records early releases late 90s) james foster. tape echo and distorted bass make up the thick sound of this trac

wade from hello records called mr. pc “detroit’s hardest working dj” about a year back, and the fruits of his labor shine through on this curious beatdown and jazz funk re-edit record. in his own words, “the scene doesn’t need another hand-stamped and numbered vinyl-only disco edit label, so i went ahead and took the proverbial razor and tape to some jazz-fusion-disco-not-disco tracks that influenced me coming up as a bass player, now fully capable for dj dance floor elevation.”

hot off a couple of 12” from topher horn, rocksteady disco follows up with its first compilation featuring a heap of heavily sampled originals from more well-known editors. pontchartrain leads the release off with a summer-inspired aural prozac number, just in time for this june release. next up is notorious detroit editor lafleur, busting out this original milky-smooth detroit boogie house production. a slight little rearrangement from rocksteady disco label boss peter croce makes this one a bit smoother for the djs. lyon, france’s g2s kicks off the flip with a big-bottomed stomper reminiscent of some mcde ‘raw cuts’. pontchartrain book-ends this release with a track that puts the ‘rocksteady’ in rocksteady disco, with heavy analog-meets-electro drum programming and complete with pontchartrain on vocoder duties. hand numbered edition of 500 copies with dl code.

another fine reissue of a chicago classic from jeff craven and his large music imprint focusing again on the dynamic artistic team of black ice productions. first released in 1992 on velvet city records, the black ice ep treads more into a deeper and jazzier vibes than their other outings at that time (such as the union camp release). a few listens and one can easily recognize the influence that all four tracks had on future labels and artists throughout the mid and late 1990 s. this is timeless, pioneering chicago deep house at its finest and a must have for all collectors.

repress ...rounding out this iteration of the moods & grooves classic series are two of its best selling releases from one of detroits most prolific producers, theo parrish, and label head mike grant. the mr. g remix of my soul, my spirit nets a pretty penny at the online marketplace so if the steep prices have deterred you, now is the time. chunky was produced during the time theo was a leader of detroit s raw & dirty house sound.

nacho marcos warm trax vol. 1 was an ovum highlight in 2015 and a much welcomed return to the label for the spanish producer. vol. 1 with its rich analogue textures and acidic flair, picked up a wealth of support. today nacho returns with vol. 2 and a new trio of trax for our trip.
